The recession has killed off a national institution – the good old Aussie bludger. With so many people out of work, the work-shy "bludgers" cannot afford to be fussy. Positions that no one has wanted for years are suddenly in hot demand as unemployment queues grow. Recruiters and industry experts said that even traditionally scorned jobs, such as telemarketing are receiving up to 100 applicants. The end of the resources boom also brought rural youngsters back to the farm as high paying mining jobs that lured them away have dried up.

"There are a lot more candidates out there", said Madeleine Hill of recruitment company Kelly. Ms Hill said that last year Kelly would receive just 15 applications for an unpopular job such as telemarketing and dirty or smelly physical labour. "Now you would be looking at 60 -100 applicants", she said. We're getting a lot more people calling in during the day looking for work. It's the complete opposite to a year ago when we were doing a lot of calling out to people asking if they knew anyone
